Caring Kids-- Animals & Art-- Camp: A week of creativity, kids, cats, and dogs

Caring Kids-- Animals & Art -- Camp campers display their works

Twelve compassionate artists spent the week at the League creating spirit animals, cat busy boxes, animal marionettes, pointillism pictures, exotic family portraits, and lots more! They also met shelter cats and dogs and were introduced to several staff members' dogs. Some of the campers' families were former adopters; several girls were repeat campers from past Caring Kids Camp sessions. All are incredibly compassionate, animal-loving, creative kids! Awesome close-up photos of campers and their art coming next week. Check back soon.

Saving the Baghdad Zoo -- a true story of hope and heroes

I'm conflicted when it comes to zoos. I do not believe that we should keep animals to be spectacles. However, with so many animals endangered, I realize that zoos can help certain species surviive. This is definitely a story of survival. Many, many interesting facts are packed into this book. Several heartbreaking stories detailing animal abuse and neglect are told. I held my breath when I read the book. The stories are gripping. In the end, can I say I felt happy that the zoo was rebuilt and is open in Baghdad today? No. Did Major Sumner and others do the right thing? Yes.

FUN to READ! Wendy Wahman's A Cat Like That

Like her Don’t Lick the Dog – Making Friends With Dogs, Wendy Wahman's A Cat Like That is instructional and tons of fun to read and look at. Wahman’s bright, bold and big cat illustrations and purrfectly precise practical advice “I’d pick a friend who played all the right games, with all the best toys, like a paper bag and catnip mouse, Ping Pong balls and a twirly bird……I’d pick a friend who wouldn’t drag me around….” make for a must read for the pre-school crowd. Read it to someone today!!
